05/11/2007 (Vietnam) U23 Vietnam 1-2 U23 Finland (2007 Agribank Cup)
The Vietnam Olympic football team suffered a 2-1 loss to Finland in the last match of the International Football match of the International Football Tournament, the Agribank Cup, on November 5.
Finland began the match on the offensive and narrowly missed scoring in the fourth minute.
But Le Cong Vinh’s header glanced off the goal post in four minutes later as well.
Then, the visitors counterattacked 16 minutes into the game and Kari Tommy managed to get on a poor clearance from a Vietnamese defender to score the first goal for Finland.
After the break, Vietnam’s striker Phan Thanh Binh broke through on the left in the 47th minute and fired a powerful shot that Finland’s keeper Ville could only punch away.
Left wing back Le Tan Tai got to the ball first to score an easy goal. Just one minute later Binh’s diving header was just saved by Finland’s keeper.
But it was not to be Vietnam’s day and in the 60th minute Finland’s striker Aatarilo Mika broke Vietnam’s defence before stunning keeper Tran Viet Cuong with a low shot. It was a disappointing result for Vietnam who was tied with Finland after their first two matches but ahead on goal difference.
Meanwhile, Uzbekistan earlier clinched the championship title after a 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe and took home US$40,000 in prize money.
Vietnam pocketed US$10,000 for coming third, while Finland, in second, took home US$20,000.
