Vietnam: Hồng Sơn, Như Thành, Phước Tứ, Việt Cường (Quang Cường 90'), Quang Thanh, Minh Châu (Minh Phương 60'), Tài Em, Vũ Phong, Tấn Tài, Công Vinh, Việt Thắng. 

Thailand: Kosin, Suree Sukha, Chonlatit, Phanrit, Thonglao, Natthaphong, Surat Sukha, Sutee Suksomkit, Suchao, Teerasil Dangda, Teerathep.

Vietnam claimed their first major title after a 3-2 aggregate victory over Thailand, winning the AFF Suzuki Cup tonight (28/12/2008) Cong Vinh’s goal in the last second helped Vietnam win the long -awaited cup and Vietnam’s dream came true.

Playing in front of more than 40,000 fans and also at the presence of Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Vietnam started the game with confidence and composure. 

Viet Cuong’s return made the hosts’ defence stronger while Suchao Nutnum’s presence after being suspended gave the visitors more width and pace on the right. 

Vietnam made several attacks in the first minutes and their two corner kicks were blocked by Thai defender and caught by goalkeeper Kosin. 

Then Thailand began their counter-attacks, causing a lot of difficulties for Vietnam. 

The visitors went ahead in the 20th minute when Dangda scored the opener with his header from Suksomkit’s free-kick. 

After the goal, Thailand played slowly, waiting for a chance to widen the gap while Vietnam put up their attacks to level the score. 

In the 44th minute Tan Tai’s cross caused chaos on the box and Quang Thanh grabbed the ball but failed to convert the chance into goal, shooting wide of the post. 

Right after the break, Vietnam began to intensify attacks , creating several chances to equalise. 

In the 66th minute Cong Vinh shot wide of the post from Tai Em’s cross and Viet Thang’s header was over the crossbar. 

Meanwhile Thailand’s counter-attacks were very dangerous. 

It was Hong Son who did pretty well tonight, saving Winothai’s quick and powerful shot in the 60th minute, denying Thong Lao’s long-range strike in the 71st minute and Dangda’s fire in the 88th minute. 

In the last minutes, Vietnam brought pressure to bear on the visitors with quick attacks.and their efforts paid off. 

In the last second Cong Vinh scored the equaliser, a vital goal for Vietnam. 

His super header from Minh Phuong’s free-kick made all the Vietnamese happy. 

Beating Thailand 2-1 in the first-leg final in Bangkok and drawing 1-1 with Thailand in the second-leg in Hanoi, Vietnam deserved this historical triumph in the regional event. 

The Vietnamese players gave 120% in the game and their performance satisfied all the football fans. 

When skipper Tai Em lifted the AFF Suzuki Cup, a new stage of development opened for Vietnam’s football.
