Frankfurt beat Vietnam 2-0 in friendly match

Vietnam’s national football squad were defeated 2-0 by Germany’s Eintracht Frankfurt in a friendly match in Hanoi’s My Dinh Stadium on Wednesday.

The failure of Vietnam’s U23 football team did not surprise local fans as they began the game without key players including top striker Le Cong Vinh, midfielders Nguyen Minh Phuong, Le Phuoc Tu and Phan Van Tai Em, who were all suffering from injuries.

Meanwhile, Huynh Quang Thanh, Nguyen Vu Phong, Phan Thanh Hung and Vo Hoang Quang, played in the clash between SHB Danang and Becamex Binh Duong at the Asian Football Confederation Cup in the earlier game on the same day.

Before the game, leaders of both the German and Vietnamese football squads admitted they knew little about each other prior to their friendly.

Frankfurt, who finished 10th in the Bundesliga this season, came to Vietnam with outstanding players like Halil Altintop of Turkey, Brazilians Chis and Caio, striker Alexander Meier and goalkeeper Oka Nikolov.

Vietnam’s Portuguese-born coach, Henrique Calisto, was worried about the fitness of his players as they were also playing for their domestic V-League club season.

However, Frankfurt had more advantages than the home side since their players are taller and physically stronger than the Vietnamese.

Frankfurt began the game with more attacks and stronger pressure on the Vietnamese defensive line.

The visitors were dangerous when playing a direct passing game and long distance shots while the Vietnamese side relied on rare counter attacks.

Despite good ball possession, Frankfurt’s strikers missed many scoring chances in the first half.

The Vietnamese side also created some scoring opportunities but failed to take advantage of them.

The second half started quickly.

Vietnam’s coach Calisto replaced some key players in the second half, and his players began the half with more attacks and stronger pressure on the German defensive line.

The visitors controlled the game later and striker Alexander Meier opened for his team in the 71st minute before Halil Altintop doubled for Frankfurt just one minute later after receiving the ball from Cincotta.

In the last minutes, Vietnamese players put more pressure on the visiting team but they had no chance to narrow the gap, leaving the score at 2-0 upon the referee’s whistle at the end of the game.

The friendly match is the result of an agreement signed in Hanoi last month between the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) and representatives from Frankfurt.

The friendly game is part of the VFF’s plans for the 1,000th anniversary of Hanoi in October and the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Germany.

During their tour of Vietnam, the Bundesliga team will also play against V-League’s Dong Tam Long An Tiles at HCMC’s Thong Nhat Stadium on Friday.
