The Philippines, deemed to be underdogs in the ASEAN championship’s Group B in Hanoi, shocked defending champions Vietnam with a 2-0 victory to take the group lead Sunday after Singapore defeated Myanmar 2-1.

The Philippines stunning win was the biggest upset in the AFF Suzuki Cup, where three-time champions Thailand also showed poor performance in their two draws against Laos and Malaysia in Group A, staged in Indonesia’s Jakarta.

The two goals came in each half from Chris Greatwich and Phil Younghusband.

Greatwich, who equalized 1-1 in the Philippines vs. Singapore game Dec. 2, beat Vietnam goalkeeper in the first half with a low header.

Vietnam played aggressively during the game but Phil Younghusband killed their hope with a low shot from close range in a counter-attack in the 79th minute.

The Philippines’ English coach Simon McMenemy said at the press meeting after the game that his side created three chances in the matches and scored two goals.

Vietnam’s Portuguese coach Henrique Calisto said his men played well but failed to net, even one time.

He also criticized the unfancied Filipinos’ way of playing, which he described as a double-deck bus put in front of the goalkeeper.

The Philippines took the lead of Group B with four points with one round of matches remaining on Dec 8.

They will take on Myanmar in a procedure match to the latter, while Vietnam will play a “live or death” game against three-time champions Singapore, who also have four points.

Vietnam got three points and a draw means an early exit.
