Vietnam hammer Macau in Goetz’s debut 

Newly-signed coach Falko Goetz made a winning start to his job in Vietnam as his men assumed total control of their 2014 World Cup qualifier against Macau with a crushing 6-0 victory in the first leg at home on Tuesday.

The German coach took over the Vietnam national football team early this month after Portuguese Henrique Calisto departed to move to a Thai club. Striker Le Cong Vinh set the tone for the game with a 19th-minute opener before doubling the hosts’ lead only three minutes later. The Vietnamese star made it a hat-trick from the penalty spot before the break time.

In-formed striker Pham Thanh Luong added the fourth in the 62nd minute and it took substituted striker Ngoc Thanh just five minutes to head home the fifth. Young midfielder Van Quyet rounded up the victory from close range with less than one minute remaining.

Buoyed by a large amount of fans at the Thong Nhat Stadium, the home side started brightly and showed attacking intention soon after kick-off, with Quang Hai’s close-range effort parried away by Macau goalie Leung Chon Kit in the first minute. Vietnamese winger Viet Cuong ran down the left flank in the 10th minute and delivered a precise cross to Cong Vinh, who headed just wide of the post.

Macau coach Leung Sui Wing said in the press briefing before the game that he was optimistic about his players as only a week ago they had played the Macau Championship and were still in competitive spirits, but the visiting team struggled to even advance over the halfway line during a hugely one-sided opening quarter.

It seemed only a matter of time before Vietnam would capitalise on their dominance and so it proved. Cong Vinh managed to be unmarked inside the box to head in the opening goal from a Thanh Luong free-kick from the right.

The striker then crossed to Quang Hai, who headed the ball straight towards the goalkeeper in the 33rd minute. Cong Vinh brought the entire stadium to its feet again less than three minutes later as he scored his second with an unstoppable header from a Thanh Luong searching cross.

From then on it was all Vietnam and they made it three through Vinh’s powerful penalty after goalie Leung Chon Kit hauled down Trong Hoang as he attempted to run past the Macau goalkeeper in an one-on-one situation.

The hosts continued to their dominance in the second half and extended the score to 4-0 in the 62nd minute. Van Quyet took a brilliant back-heel pass from Quang Hai and slipped the ball through the advancing Macau goalie toward Thanh Luong, who poked into an empty net.

Vietnam continued to flood toward and substituted striker Ngoc Thanh entered the record book with a clinical header from a right corner in the 67th minute. Van Quyet capped the hosts’ stunning performance in a spectacular fashion in the last minute of the game as he bamboozled his way past the Macau goalie in an one-on-one situation to slot into an empty net.

With a six-goal deficit to overturn, it will now take some turnaround for the Macau side to prevent Vietnam advancing to the second qualifying round to take on Qatar.
