U23 Vietnam 0-0 U23 Myanmar (2011 SEA Games - Group B)

05/11/2011 (Indonesia) U23 Vietnam 0-0 U23 Myanmar (2011 SEA Games- Group B)

Vietnam was held to a goalless draw by 10-man Myanmar in the second match day on Saturday of group B at the Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia, despite of displaying better ball possession from a pressing style all over the field.

Players of German coach Falko Goetz took control of the competition rhythm and dominated the middle area, pushing Myanmar back to play the ball on their own side after staging a low formation for defence since the second half.

Fourteen minutes into the second session, Vietnamese striker Van Quyet dribbled the ball to pierce through the Myanmarese defensive line to confront goalie Thiha Si Thu. Center defender Moe Win had to tackle Quyet to save the goal frame and received a red card.

From the moment, Myanmar even lowered their formation to resist relentless attacks from Vietnam. Yet, Myanmar launched dangerous counter attacks towards Vietnam, once hitting the ball against the crossbar of the frame of Vietnamese keeper Buu Ngoc.

The most notable chance for Vietnam fell in the 38th minute when the side was awarded a free kick just 20 meters from the goal frame. Midfielder Thanh Luong blasted a flying pass into the box for Van Binh who was speeding up and cushioned into the goal from a short range.

However, it was not recognized as Binh falling in offside position. With the result, Vietnam is standing atop group B with four points thanks to better goal difference from Myanmar who had won Laos 3-2 in opening games.

Vietnam will next take on Timor Leste on Nov.9 (7:00pm), Brunei on Nov.12 (4:00pm) and Laos on Nov.17 (4:00pm).
